From Eco-Worrier to Eco-Warrior
On Monday, October 19, Janelle Gardner will be the guest speaker at the Comox Valley Horticultural Society meeting. The evening opens with the Society’s brief Annual General Meeting (AGM), followed by Janelle’s presentation – members are encouraged to arrive on time, and visitors are warmly welcome.
At a time when we’re witnessing weather extremes throughout the gardening season, when we are overwhelmed by headlines about the impact of climate change near and far, and when systemic change just isn’t happening fast enough, you might be feeling paralyzed or numb. It’s time to get unstuck from climate grief and get “stuck in” to the garden instead – turning your eco-worrier energy into eco-warrior energy!
Janelle will speak about how to find a sense of focus and agency for climate action right in your own backyard – literally. Your garden and the gardens in our communal spaces can be the starting point for personal and community climate action, and a way to restore our sense of connection to the land. With about 11 percent of Canada’s land in private hands, property owners can (and must) make a big difference.
Janelle is a Comox gardener and storyteller with a small suburban garden. She will share practical tips that can help anyone with a garden big or small to make measurable progress towards a vision of stewardship where gardens are a space for resiliency and change, both for the planet and within ourselves.
Bring your questions, your worries and your trowel-ready optimism – you’ll leave with ideas you can put to work in your own patch of ground.
Want to attend? If you’re joining us in person, we’ll be at the conference hall in the Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay. Doors open at 6.30pm and the meeting will begin at 7pm, starting with the AGM. If you want to join us via Zoom see below for registration details.
How do I register for Zoom? Advance registration for Zoom is required for both members and non-members. Current members will receive a separate Zoom invitation. Registration for non-members ($5.50) is very simple – visit our website at www.comoxvalleyhortsociety.ca by 5:00pm on Friday, October 16, as it requires two days to process.
