| Speaker Profile | Nina Shoroplova is an author, writer, photographer, and heritage researcher whose current work celebrates the beauty, botany, and biography of trees. She helps others observe the urban forest around them. Drawing on thirty-plus decades of studying Metro Vancouver’s treescapes—including through her acclaimed book Legacy of Trees: Purposeful Wandering in Vancouver’s Stanley Park—she brings an accessible, narrative style to the science and joy of tree identification. Focusing on helping readers notice seasonal changes, distinctive features, and personal stories woven into city canopies, she blends botanical insight with a deep love of place. A former health professional and communications specialist, Nina applies her trainings in careful observation and plain-language explanations to make tree identification inviting for readers at all levels. In writing Cattle Ranch: The Story of the Douglas Lake Cattle Company in 1979, she showed her love of the land. As an active writer and member of the Vancouver Chapter of the Master Gardeners of BC and Nature Vancouver’s Botany Section, she has led numerous tree-identification walks for them, the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival, and other groups, inspiring community engagement with local urban nature. Born in Wales, she has lived in England, in Australia in plateau sheep country, in British Columbia’s Interior, and is now based in Vancouver. Nina continues to explore the connections between culture, history, and our natural world. Identifying 101 Trees is her newest contribution toward fostering a richer understanding of the trees that shape our shared environment. |
